ChatGPT started the AI chatbot revolution and continues to blaze a trail with the technology. But it would take a big step back if its reported latest idea ever comes to fruition.

Do We Need a ChatGPT Social Network?

As first noted by The Verge, ChatGPT parent company OpenAI is working on a social network very much like X:

While the project is still in early stages, we’re told there’s an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT’s image generation that has a social feed. CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project, our sources say. It’s unclear if OpenAI’s plan is to release the social network as a separate app or integrate it into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app globally last month. An OpenAI spokesperson didn’t respond in time for publication.

The report says that the idea behind the social network is to make it simple to share content:

One idea behind the OpenAI social prototype, we’ve heard, is to have AI help people share better content. “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous,” says someone working at another big AI lab. “Especially how people create viral tweets by getting it to say something stupid.

A social network wouldn’t be a huge surprise for ChatGPT. Elon Musk’s X has strong integration with Grok. Meta also features its AI on Facebook and Instagram. More importantly, both of those AI models train on real-time user data, which is a big advantage that OpenAI is likely interested in matching.

Leave the Social Networks to Rivals

While there are some big advantages, I hope OpenAI will leave the social network on the drawing board. The world of social networking is already fractured beyond repair, and adding in another option will only make that even worse.

Instead of creating another social network, OpenAI should instead make it easier to share content, like its wonderful images, through its popular app. That would help ChatGPT continue to grow.
