The 10 Biggest Switch Games That Don’t Work on the Switch 2 (Right Now)

The 10 Biggest Switch Games That Don’t Work on the Switch 2 (Right Now)

The Nintendo Switch 2 may be backwards compatible with original Switch games, but that doesn’t mean every game will work on the new console perfectly. In fact, Nintendo recently updated a long list of games that don’t run as expected on the Switch 2 at the moment.

The scope of these performance issues varies: some of them could be quite tolerable, but others are game-breaking enough that Nintendo created a separate list of games with “start up issues.” To save you sifting through the entries yourself, here are all the biggest games with start-up issues on the Switch 2 right now.

It’s possible—and I’m hopeful—that these issues will be fixed with future updates.

Darksiders Genesis

Darksiders Genesis is the top-down prequel entry in the long-running Darksiders series. It see you swapping between two characters—Strife and War—as you shoot or slash your way through hordes of demons. Alternatively, you can play in split-screen co-op mode by taking one character each. But you won’t be able to play it at all on the Switch 2 right now as Nintendo says the game doesn’t boot up.

9

Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is an online multiplayer horror game that sees four survivors pitted against a single killer, slinking through the shadows to snag them on gnarly hooks before they can activate enough generators to escape. The game has garnered a lot of attention from horror fans by licensing iconic characters to play as, like Leatherface, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Ghost Face, the Demogorgon, and more. Hopefully the Switch 2 version receives a patch to keep this long list of horror icons available.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes is yet another top-down fighting game that refuses to work on the Switch 2 in its current state. This side-sequel to the No More Heroes series sees you take control of Travis Touchdown as he is sucked into a possessed games console while battling Badman. It’s something of a variety act, as the game takes on a range of play styles to fit the different game worlds Travis finds himself in.

7

Little Nightmares Complete Edition

Little Nightmares Complete Edition combines three of the creepy puzzle-platform games into a single package for the Switch, but Nintendo lists it as another game with start-up issues on the Switch 2. It’s unclear if the individual games are working, as Nintendo only mentions the Complete Edition in its listings.

NBA 2K25

Basketball fans may be disappointed if they try to boot up NBA 2K25 once the Switch 2 launches because Nintendo lists it as having issues starting up. Other NBA games in the series appear to be unaffected at this time, so if these games don’t receive a patch, you’ll at least have plenty of other options for shooting hoops on the Switch 2.

5

Warframe

Warframe is a free-to-play third-person shooter that has been active on multiple gaming platforms since as far back as 2013. In it, you battle different alien factions, leveling up along the way to further upgrade your Warframe and wreak more havoc. We’ll need to see an update to keep playing it on the Switch 2, though, as Nintendo says it doesn’t start up at the moment.

4

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

A follow-up to The Stick of Truth, which saw players taking part in a fantasy war among the foulmouthed children of South Park, The Fractured But Whole dons cape and mask for superhero shenanigans instead. These are hilarious games that make use of a 2D art style to perfectly mimic South Park episodes, although this style was ditched for Snow Day!, the third in the series. The Fractured But Whole is the only game in the series not compatible with the Switch 2 right now, so hopefully it will be fixed soon.

3

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

A follow-up to Wolfenstein: The New Order—which isn’t available on Switch—Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus sees you taking on a Nazi regime that’s taken control of the United States in this alternate-history first-person shooter. It’s a rich story with a captivating set of characters, contrasted by off-the-wall enemies and machinery for you to combat. Just don’t plan to do so on the Switch 2 at launch.

Rocket League

Soccer, rocket-powered cars, and multiplayer madness: Rocket League has all of that and more. This free-to-play online game is massively popular, and is one of the highest-profile games with start-up issues on the Switch 2 at the time of writing. If you want to keep playing, you’ll need to hang onto your original Switch or grab a second console for the time being.

1

DOOM Eternal

DOOM Eternal is the adrenaline-pumping, demon-slaying follow-up to 2016’s highly acclaimed DOOM reboot. While the first in the new series still works on the Switch 2, this follow-up is having trouble booting on the new system. This is bad timing as the gaming world is due to get sucked back into the franchise with the upcoming release of DOOM: The Dark Ages, although that means developers are likely prioritizing a fix for DOOM Eternal on the Switch 2.

You can view the full list of games with Switch 2 compatibility issues on Nintendo’s website; we’re due another update to it in May. Hopefully, most games will receive updates to fix their compability issues.

Aside from these games, it’s also worth mentioning that Nintendo Labo is not intended to work with the Switch 2, and there are a series of games that will only work with Joy-Con 1 controllers, such as WarioWare: Move It, Ring Fit Adventure, and 1-2-Switch.
