Google has advised users to update their Instagram app to the latest version to address a battery drain issue affecting many Android devices.
In a blog post, Google said users should update their Instagram app to version 382.0.0.49.84 to address the issue.
The announcement, made on the Android Help Community, says: “Instagram is rolling out an updated app that should fix a battery drain issue on Android devices.”
Google doesn’t say which manufacturers or Android versions are most affected by the issue, which appears to have been more prevalent on devices running the May 2025 software update.
For those who have noticed their battery disappearing at an alarming rate when using the social media app, you’ll want to head over to the Google Play Store and update Instagram.
How to make sure you’re running the latest version of Instagram
If you want to check whether you’ve got the latest version of the app, long press the Instagram icon and select ‘App info’. You’ll see the version number there. You can then head over to Google Play and make sure you’re running the latest version of the app. This should alleviate any issues.
It’s not clear why the Instagram app has been consuming more battery than usual, but it’s good to see Google and Meta working quickly to resolve the issue, even if it is slightly odd to see Google address an issue like this directly.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Google, with both the dedicated Android Show and the developer-focused I/O event taking place. The highlight for us was the new design language for Pixel phones coming in Android 16, called Material 3 Expressive.
This adds a load of new animations and design elements to the software, although it’ll likely only make a notable difference for those who have one of the best Pixel phones, as these features don’t often trickle down to other manufacturers’ Android skins.
