Why Apple Skipped iOS 19 and Renamed Its Entire OS Lineup

Byte-Sized Brief

  • Apple renamed its operating systems to indicate their release year.
  • iOS 19 will materialize as iOS 26.
  • Apple’s also renaming the operating systems for its iPads, computers, and more.

iOS 19, we never knew you… because Apple jumped right over you and a handful of other iOS versions to get to iOS 26. At WWDC 2025, Apple confirmed that it’s changing the naming conventions for its operating systems to make future versions of the software less confusing. Now, instead of iOS 19, you can expect to receive iOS 26—aligned with its release year (kinda)—in the next major Apple operating system update.

iOS 26, which is rumored to be code-named “Luck,” will pack in even more Apple Intelligence features and will have a deeply upgraded user interface featuring Apple’s Liquid Glass technology, which it debuted during WWDC 2025. Apple hasn’t officially confirmed when we’ll see iOS 26 in the wild, but most analysts expect it will be available when the next generation of iPhones is released this fall.
