If you’re a Discord user, you might have noticed something new popping up in your app, and it’s not another prompt to try a free trial of Nitro. This time it’s about “Discord Orbs,” a brand-new in-app currency that’s currently in beta.

You can earn these shiny new Orbs by completing what Discord calls “Quests.” They’re essentially little challenges designed to get you interacting with ads. This could mean watching promotional videos or even streaming specific games to your friends. It’s simply a way for Discord to keep you engaged while also giving brands a new avenue for promotion, but at least you get rewarded in the process.

So, what can you do with these Orbs once you’ve earned a few? You can spend them in the Discord Shop, just like you would with real money, to snag regular digital items. But here’s where it gets interesting—Orbs also unlock exclusive items you can’t get any other way. There are special badges to show off your dedication or even three-day passes to try out Discord Nitro, the platform’s premium subscription service. It’s a nice perk if you’ve been on the fence about subscribing.

Before Orbs came along, if a publisher or brand wanted to offer rewards for completing Quests, they had to provide their own. That meant things like unique avatar decorations or in-game bonuses. While that is still an option, Orbs provide a much more streamlined and universal alternative. It means more consistent rewards that can add up more easily, meaning better rewards.

For now, Discord Orbs are rolling out to a “small number” of users globally, so don’t be surprised if you haven’t seen them—I don’t see them yet, either. If you’re one of the lucky few in the beta, you’ll get a notification in the app letting you know.
