Don’t Let the Name Fool You—Mercedes’ New G-Class Means Business

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is often seen today as a luxurious status symbol, more at home in Beverly Hills than on rugged trails. But that wasn’t always the case.

Originally built for military use, the G-Class earned its reputation as a tough, no-nonsense off-roader—much like the classic Land Rover Defender.

Now, Mercedes is tipping its hat to that rugged heritage with a new limited edition. It’s called the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition Stronger Than The 1980s—yes, really.

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA has arrived, and it’s not just stylish—it’s faster, smarter, and more advanced than ever before.

Just Like the OGs—but New

Mercedes didn’t overhaul the G-Class—specifically the straight-six G550—for this retro remake, but the throwback vibes are spot on. Most of the updates are visual.

It comes in three classic-inspired colors you won’t find on the regular G-Class: Agave, Cream, and Colorado Beige. They’re clean, earthy gloss tones that feel straight out of the past.

Matte black finishes cover the front end, fender flares, and rear bumper for that rugged, utilitarian look. While the Professional Package offers a similar aesthetic, it skips key details like this special edition’s blacked-out headlight and grille surrounds.

Unique touches help this G-Class stand apart, starting with amber turn signals and a soft rear tire cover. Instead of the usual hard shell, it gets a simple vinyl wrap with a printed Mercedes star.

A vintage-style “Mercedes-Benz” badge sits on a silver plate in the lower corner of the tailgate. It’s a subtle nod to the SUV’s roots.

Exclusive 18-inch split five-spoke wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires come standard, borrowed from the Professional Package. Rubber mud flaps round out the rugged look, while Agave-painted models score a roof rack and rear ladder for extra utility.

The changes are minimal but meaningful in the Stronger Than The 1980s G-Class. Most of the cabin stays true to the standard G550, except for a few standout retro cues.

The seats are now upholstered in Dove Grey checkered plaid, echoing the look of classic Mercedes off-roaders. A special edition badge is mounted on the dashboard grab handle, and a numbered plaque sits proudly on the center console.

Even the door jamb gets a nostalgic twist with a redesigned “Schöckl Proved” badge styled like it came straight out of the 1980s. And when you unlock it, the puddle lights beam out a bold message: “G – Stronger Than Time.”

Even though it’s one of the most distinctive G-Class variants in years, Mercedes is keeping it seriously exclusive. Only 460 units will be produced globally.

Each one is built on the G550 platform, powered by a turbocharged and electrically supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six. Output comes in at 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.

It includes four-wheel drive and a full set of locking differentials for real off-road capability. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but expect a premium over the G550’s $148,250 starting price.

A handful of these retro-styled beasts will be imported to the U.S., and deliveries are slated to begin later this year.
