FTC Is Refunding Unwanted Fortnite Purchases

Summary

  • FTC refunds $126 million to players over unwanted in-game purchases due to Epic Games’ deceptive tactics.
  • Epic Games utilized “dark patterns” such as single-button purchases, disturbing players with unexpected charges.
  • Consumers, especially parents, entitled to refunds must cash or redeem checks within specified timeframes.

Fortnite, being played by many kids and having a ton of microtransactions, has a huge problem with unwanted or accidental purchases. After Epic seemingly took advantage of it, the FTC is now refunding these unwanted purchases to players and parents—and you can still submit a claim.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing over $126 million in refunds to players who were charged for unwanted in-game purchases. This latest disbursement brings the total amount of refunds issued to nearly $200 million, stemming from a 2023 settlement with Fortnite developer Epic Games.

Epic Games agreed to a $245 million settlement after the FTC alleged the company used deceptive tactics to trick players into making unintended purchases. These tactics included, among other things, “dark patterns” that involved things such as single-button purchases that often occurred without additional confirmation steps. Epic also seemed to infamously lock users out of their accounts if they attempted to dispute the charges with their financial institutions. These practices reportedly led to numerous complaints from consumers, many of whom were children or their parents, who found themselves with unexpected charges on credit cards and bank accounts.

You might even be entitled to a refund.

The initial round of refunds was issued in December 2024, with 629,344 payments totaling more than $72 million. This recent phase, executed on June 25 and June 26, is going to see around 969,173 checks and PayPal payments to consumers who had previously filed valid claims.

Those affected had the option to select their preferred payment method when completing their claim forms. Those receiving checks are advised to cash them within 90 days, as indicated on the check itself. For recipients of PayPal payments, the redemption period is 30 days. And if you haven’t filed a claim yet and you’ve been affected by this at some point or other, the FTC has also reopened the claims process for eligible Fortnite players and their parents or guardians. Consumers who have not yet submitted a claim now have until July 9th to do so through the official FTC website.

For any inquiries regarding their payments, consumers should contact Rust Consulting, Inc., the refund administrator, directly. They can be reached by phone at 1-833-915-0880 or via email at admin@fortniterefund.com. The FTC emphasizes that it will never request payment or account information from individuals to facilitate a refund, so if someone that claims works at the FTC reaches out to you to try and get you to share information, it’s very much a scam.

Head over to the official FTC website if you want to submit a claim. You only have a couple of weeks to do so, so act quickly.
