Still rocking an older LG phone? Well, it’s your last chance to get any software updates before LG fully retires all smartphones and exits the business.

LG’s Smartphone Exit Is Here

LG is shutting down its smartphone update servers on June 30, 2025, and has advised customers that no more feature or security updates will be available after the deadline. The company had already announced its exit from the Android smartphone industry back in 2021, promising three years of software updates to concerned customers.

Now that we’re past the promised period, the updates are going away. Additionally, its LG Bridge PC program, which helped take backups and transfer data between two LG phones, is also shutting down. LG’s notice announcing the shutdown also claims that all “personal information collected for the services will be immediately destroyed when the services end,” unless required by law or internal company policies.

Even LG’s latest phone, the LG Wing, can only go as high as Android 13 with the latest updates. This leaves plenty of LG phones out in the world lacking critical Android security updates that leave them vulnerable to cyberattacks.

LG can hardly be blamed, though. Its smartphone business suffered 23 consecutive quarters of loss, totaling close to $4.5 billion in 2021, when the company announced its exit. It also doesn’t hold any measurable share in the market at the moment. Regardless, it’s a troublesome situation if you’re looking to hold onto your LG phone.

What’s Next for LG Phones?

Technically, you can continue using your LG phone without any problems after the update servers shut down. However, with the latest Android version available to you being almost three generations old, you’re not going to have a ton of newer features. The more concerning bit is the fact that you won’t get security updates, which makes you more susceptible to any malware or phishing scams you might encounter.

The situation reminds me of the time when Microsoft decided to bail on Windows Phone. I loved the OS, and my two phones both had great specs and prices for the time. I used them for as long as I could, but eventually had to jump ship to Android when the phones couldn’t keep up with the apps everyone around me was using, and the security hazard they were.
