Sharing your Max account with someone outside of your household? You’re not alone, and Max has a new way to handle it that looks awfully familiar. Just like Netflix, Max is now letting you add an “Extra Member” to your account, but it’ll cost you.
For an extra $7.99 a month, the primary account holder can invite someone outside their home to create their own separate profile under the existing subscription. This new feature, which launched today, gives that extra member their own login credentials and the ability to stream on one device at a time. They’ll also get all the other perks that come with the main account’s plan.
Now, if this sounds familiar, it’s because Netflix rolled out a similar feature in early 2023 during its crackdown on password sharing. Netflix’s “Extra Member” option currently costs $6.99 per month on the “Standard with Ads,” “Standard,” and “Premium” plans.

How to Add a Profile on Netflix for People Outside Your Household
Netflix lets you create individual profiles for each family member, but the company prefers for everyone to live in the same household. Eventually, though, people move out. What then? Turns out, instead of paying for their own account, you can set them up as an “Extra Member” on yours.
So, what’s the difference here? Well, not much. Max’s approach is a flat $7.99 a month, regardless of whether the primary account has ads or not. This means if you’re on Max’s “Basics with Ads” plan, which costs $9.99 a month on its own, adding an extra member nearly doubles your monthly bill. In that scenario, the extra member might just consider getting their own basic Max subscription.
However, if you’re shelling out for Max’s ad-free tiers, which are pricier at $16.99 a month for the “Standard: plan and $20.99 for the “Premium” one, then the $7.99 extra member fee might seem a bit more palatable. Especially since Max’s Premium plan lets you stream on four devices simultaneously, so adding one more for less than the cost of another full subscription could be appealing for some families or groups.
One nice touch Max is offering is the ability to transfer an existing adult profile to the new Extra Member account. This means if someone’s been borrowing your Max login, they won’t lose their watch history and recommendations when they get their own paid access.
However, there’s one important thing to note. This extra member add-on is only available if you’re billed directly through Max and not part of any type of bundle. That includes the Disney+, Hulu, Max bundle, and any Max promotion you may have through a carrier or internet provider. Also, each account is limited to one extra member, and that member needs to be in the same country as the primary account holder.
Ultimately, both Max and Netflix are clearly aiming to convert those who’ve been enjoying borrowed access into paying customers. Whether the $7.99 price point for Max’s Extra Member is attractive enough will likely depend on which Max subscription tier you currently have and how much the person you’re sharing with values having their own streaming experience.
