Although it’s since been succeeded by the Google Pixel 9a, the Pixel 8a remains a brilliant choice of Android smartphone, especially for anyone who wants to experience some premium tools on a tighter budget.
It’s also much cheaper than Apple’s own budget-friendly choice, the iPhone 16e, and boasts the likes of a 120Hz refresh rate and two rear cameras.
Speaking of the cameras, the Pixel 8a is fitted with 64MP and 13MP ultrawide lenses, while the iPhone 16e sports just a single 48MP fusion lens instead. We found the Pixel 8a’s camera to be “impressive” and remains capable even in lower light conditions.
In fact, we noted the Pixel 8a did a brilliant job at reducing lens flare, which is an issue we struggled with on the much more expensive iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Pixel phones are perhaps most known for their AI prowess, especially with their ability to easily edit photos without needing a Photoshop subscription. These tools include Magic Eraser which deletes unwanted objects and people from photos and Best Take, a clever feature that ensures everyone looks their best in group shots.
Aside from photo editing tools, the Pixel 8a also sports numerous other AI features including Circle to Search and a plethora of phone call tools too including Call Screen which detects and filters out spam calls and Hold For Me which waits on hold for you so you don’t have to.
Most notably, Google offers up to a whopping seven years of Android OS upgrades for the Pixel 8a, which will take the handset up to Android 21.
Overall, we gave the Pixel 8a a near-perfect 4.5-star rating, with Editor Max Parker concluding “with a durable build and seven years of software updates, the Pixel 8a should last for an extended period of time.”
Considering we hailed the Pixel 8a as the “easiest to recommend Pixel phone yet”, if you’re looking for a brilliant Android handset but don’t want to splurge, then this deal is not to be missed.
