Nice Features That Don’t Measure up to an AirTag

Nice Features That Don’t Measure up to an AirTag

Summary

  • FineTrack has loud alerts and built-in keyring support but lacks AirTag’s Precision Finding.
  • The wallet-friendly FineTrack Slim is loud and compact but requires a proprietary charger.
  • Both options use Apple’s powerful Find My network.

AirTags have become the standard way to track items, especially if you’re an Apple user with an iPhone and more. While the Ugreen FineTrack and FineTrack Slim are two alternatives with some unique features, both fall flat for a wide variety of reasons.

The Ugreen FineTrack is the most direct competitor to the AirTag. It reminded me of an old-school Tile tracker and measures 1.41 x 1.41 x 0.29 inches. While it’s larger than an AirTag, it’s flat and easier to hold. It also offers something that many AirTag users have longed for—a built-in keyring. Since keys are one of the most popular uses for an item tracker, it’s nice to see you won’t have to spend extra on an accessory to attach the FineTrack to your keys.

The tracker is ready to go out of the box. The CR20232 coin cell battery is installed. Under normal use, Ugreen says it can provide up to two years before needing to be switched out. That’s twice as long as the AirTag, and a big plus for anyone concerned about electronic waste.

Another big feature is that the FineTrack is compatible with Apple’s Find My network. That unlocks the billions of Apple devices always searching for the FineTrack. As anyone who has used an AirTag will tell you, the network can provide tracking almost anywhere on Earth.

With Find My compatibility, adding the tracker takes just a few minutes and is similar to the AirTag setup process. Just head to the Find My app, choose My Items and then add the FineTrack. You can customize a name and icon.

I used the tracker with my luggage for a few trips. Tracking with the Find My app was quick and easy, and I always knew where the luggage was. I even saw it when it was loaded onto my flight.

When it comes time to track something nearby, the FineTrack also solves one of my biggest gripes with the AirTag—its very small and hard-to-hear speaker. The FineTrack is at least twice as loud, which makes it much easier to track down. I could even hear the speaker covered with clothes. The tradeoff, though, is significant.

One of my favorite AirTag features is Precision Finding. With a modern iPhone, you can see exact directions to the AirTag like “turn left” and “8 feet.” The FineTrack doesn’t have that. If you lose an item, you’ll need to hope the speaker is loud enough to help you track it down. For me, Precision Finding is more important.

Ready to Fit into Your Wallet, With Some Caveats

Another big downside of the oval AirTag is that it isn’t exactly made to track a wallet. While there are some workarounds and options made specifically with an AirTag holder, many of us don’t want to give up our well-worn wallet.

The FineTrack Slim provides a big help and is shaped just like a credit card. It’s a bit thicker, but fits just fine in all the wallets I tried it out with. The speaker is another big standout, which was a big surprise for me. Being so thin, and covered by other cards, I didn’t expect that the Slim model would outpace the AirTag, but it certainly did. I had a family member hide my wallet under a couch cushion, and I could easily track it down from across the house. But just like the larger cousin, there is no Precision Finding available.

A rechargeable battery can provide up to 6 months of normal use. But charging the Slim brings my least-favorite part of the tracker—a non-standard charging cable. I have enough charging cables as is, and to find a specific cable six months later is pretty much a dealbreaker for me, and probably many others.

Like the FineTrack, the range of the FineTrack Slim was just fine and similar to an AirTag.

Should You Buy the Ugreen FineTrack or FineTrack Slim?

There’s no reason that I can recommend purchasing either the Ugreen FineTrack or FineTrack Slim over a standard AirTag. While the FineTrack has twice as long battery life as an AirTag, being able to go for two years on a single cell, that’s truly its only standout feature. It’s larger than an AirTag, and doesn’t offer some of the Precision Finding options on an iPhone that help the AirTag standout.

If you can’t bear to change wallets, the FineTrack Slim is OK. But along with the lack of Precision Finding, being able to keep up with the tiny, non-standard charging cable might also become another problem.

Even almost five years after the AirTag was introduced, it’s still the best item tracker on the market with an accessory ecosystem to boot.
