The nature of an IMAX release is movies only have a limited of time to play on those screens until the next movie hits. That’s especially true over the summer when seemingly every single big release is either shot for, or upscaled to, a bigger-scale IMAX. And so that’s why, starting today, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is very unlikely to be playing in IMAX anywhere near you, despite it being optimized for the format.
But there’s good news. Warner Bros. just announced that Sinners will be back on 70mm IMAX screens (those are the biggest, best, and most limited ones) from Thursday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 21, and tickets are on sale now.
“Audiences have spoken and we listened,” Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, said in a press release. “If ever a film needed to be experienced in this incredible larger-than-life format, it’s Sinners. Ryan has delivered a film that has been embraced by fans who appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating a film for this screen-filling format and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see it—or see it again—in 70mm IMAX.”
Having seen Sinners in 70mm IMAX last week I must say, it was incredible. Coogler shot the film in the full screen, 1:43 IMAX ratio regularly used by the likes of Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, delivering an image that’s so massive and detailed, it feels like you are standing in the room with the vampires.
The theaters that will be getting Sinners back are as follows:
- City Walk Stadium 19 + IMAX (Los Angeles)
- Irvine Spectrum and IMAX (Irvine)
- Lincoln Square 13 + IMAX (New York)
- Metreon 16 + IMAX (San Francisco)
- Indiana State Museum (Indianapolis)
- Arizona Mills IMAX (Phoenix)
- Autonation IMAX (Ft. Lauderdale)
- Webb Chapel IMAX (Dallas)
- Colossus IMAX (Toronto)
Those also happen to be nine of the 10 places in the world a person could see Sinners in 70mm IMAX the past two weeks.
Why is Sinners even being removed? Well, Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts is now in theaters, and it gets first dibs on those IMAX screens for a few weeks. Final Destination: Bloodlines will get a bunch after that, then Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, How to Train Your Dragon, F1, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and on and on. So it’s a lot of competition for not a lot of screens. But, thankfully, Sinners is getting a second chance.
