Nintendo’s Switch 2 will officially release next week on June 5. But those who already preordered apparently won’t be able to rest easy just yet. That’s because many have begun reporting that multiple third-party retailers are canceling Switch 2 preorders with no warning or information as to why.
Switch 2 Preorders Are Being Canceled Randomly
The entire point of a preorder—especially for something as hyped up as the Switch 2—is to give you some level of assurance that you’ll have one come launch day. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a few scattered reports about Switch 2 buyers having their preorders canceled out of the blue over the past several months. This isn’t really a new issue, as this kind of issue tends to happen with all major preorders, especially for big gaming consoles like the Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming soon!
What is new, though, is the recent wave of cancellations that people have started reporting over the past couple of days. Many Switch 2 buyers have taken to the console’s subreddit to share the disappointing news that their preorders had been canceled, without any kind of explanation as to why. And without an official explanation, all we can really do is speculate as to the cause.
Most of the cancellations seem to have come from Walmart, at least based on what I’ve seen on Reddit so far. The canceled orders don’t seem to have any other connection. Though Vice reports that some noticed that orders made with Affirm’s pay later service were more numerous among the canceled listings.
Of course, as I mentioned before, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen preorder cancellations so close to launch. We also saw it happen with the PlayStation 5 a few years ago. With June 5 arriving next week, you hopefully won’t have to babysit your preorder for too long over the coming days.
But, if you do find yourself with a canceled preorder—or if you just haven’t preordered yet—some stores will have open access to Switch 2 consoles on launch day.
These Stores Will Sell Switch 2 Consoles at Launch
While there is no doubt many third-party retailers will be offering the Switch 2 in-store after launch, only a few have shared specific plans to list the console. Among these few are Best Buy, Costco, and Target.
Target has shared plans to not only sell Switch 2 consoles on June 5, but that some of its stores will also offer special launch events to celebrate the console’s release. These events will run from morning to afternoon, with online listings expected to arrive on June 6.
Best Buy, on the other hand, will be holding a midnight launch event at many of its stores. Those who preordered can pick up their console starting at midnight. And Best Buy will offer anyone who didn’t preorder the chance to purchase a Switch 2 as long as supplies last. At this moment, Best Buy hasn’t revealed when it will list the Switch 2 on its website after launch.
Finally, Costco is the only other store to announce plans to sell the Switch 2 on June 5. At the moment, it is unclear whether the units will be available in store that day, or if they’ll be available online only. Still, at least Costco will remain another option for last-minute buyers.
While there will be some options to purchase the Switch 2 without preordering, those who have already preordered will want to keep a close eye on their orders. If you find yourself facing a cancellation, there isn’t much you can really do. Hopefully, you can rely on one of these other purchase options to claim your new Nintendo console before supplies run out.
