Netflix is already using generative AI in its original shows

Netflix admitted during its earnings call on Thursday that it used generative AI to create VFX in The Eternaut, a Netflix original from Argentina that was released in April 2025. The company’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that generative AI was specifically used for a VFX shot in the post-apocalyptic drama, but the move is one of several ways Netflix is embracing AI.

According to Sarandos, the creators of The Eternaut wanted to include a shot of building collapsing in Buenos Aires, and rather than contract a studio of visual effects artists to create the footage, Netflix used generative AI to create it. “Using AI powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed,” Sarandos shared during the earnings call. “In fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with… traditional VFX tools and workflows.”

The shot “just wouldn’t have been feasible for a show on that budget,” Sarandos says, as someone with some input on the show’s budget. The executive says that The Eternaut features “the very first Gen AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film.” Clearly, the show is also a prototype for how Netflix can avoid costs it doesn’t want to swallow in the future.

Workers in the entertainment industry have not taken kindly to the use of generative AI. Labor strikes — including the recently resolved SAG-AFTRA video game strike — have made securing protections against AI a central issue. The Oscar-nominated film The Brutalist came under fire in 2024 for using AI tools during production. Beyond that, whether generative AI models were illegally trained on copyrighted material is still an open question.

Netflix plans to use generative AI to create ads for its ad-support Netflix subscription, and the company is reportedly testing a new search feature powered by OpenAI models. Using generative AI in production might seem par for the course for a company that’s already invested, but it could help to normalize a technology that many creatives remain actively against.

Watch TV Shows Online Free: Top Sites for 2025

Watch TV Shows Online Free: Top Sites for 2025

The Download

  • You can watch many TV shows for free online using sites like Fandango, Pluto TV, and Tubi.
  • These free streaming options often have ads, but they provide access to lots of popular shows.
  • Remember that not all platforms offer the latest episodes, so you may find older shows more often.

There are plenty of websites out there that let you stream free TV shows online—many of which include some of today’s most popular programs. We’ve spent hours on the couch to compile this list of only the best free and legal TV show sources currently out there.

There are pros and cons to each, but there’s definitely something for everyone no matter what kind of show you might be looking to watch.

What We Like

  • Large selection of shows.

  • Ability to filter free content.

  • Ability to download content to watch offline.

Fandango at Home is an online on-demand TV show and movie streaming service, with a number of shows and movies available to watch for free.

The free ones have ads, but for a platform that offers high-quality, relatively popular shows from networks like CBS, Fox, HBO and more, those ads are definitely tolerable.

You can filter TV shows by genre or select the checkbox for Free TV only, which filters out all the paid content so all you see is what’s available to watch for free.

As a nice bonus, you can also browse by Most Watched, Release Date and Recently Added to find hidden gems you might not be able to find otherwise.

Similar to ShareTV, Yidio is a TV show source aggregator that points you in the direction of other third-party hosts where you should be able to watch a particular episode.

You can use the sidebar to browse by genre and filter available shows by what’s available on several premium streaming services. If you’re looking for something to watch for free, you’ll want to select the Free filter.

When you select a show, you’ll be shown a summary based on IMDb info along with several thumbnails of episodes that are available. Select any thumbnail to be taken to the specific episode listing.

The downside to using Yidio is that its free listings aren’t the most accurate or up to date, and you may come across a show that only has short clips rather than full episodes available to watch for free despite its listing in the Free category.

What We Like

  • Great layout and ability to search/filter lots of content.

  • Detailed info for each show, including reviews.

  • Save shows to watch again or later through account.

The Internet Archive isn’t an official streaming service, but it’s one of the best places to look for public access to digital content. You can access old websites, software, games, music, video content and a massive library of public domain books.

In its Television section, you can browse through TV recordings that include shows, commercials, and even government proceedings. Many of these pieces of content have hundreds of thousands of views.

The site organizes content into collections based on type. You can also use the filters on the left side to find shows by year, topic, collection, creator and language.

What We Like

  • Good mix of live and on-demand shows.

  • Similar to traditional cable television.

  • Desktop and mobile apps available.

With the live-streaming Pluto TV platform, you can channel surf over 250 free channels in genres such as news, entertainment, sports, comedy, and more.

Some of the content is live and some of it isn’t. It’s a bit like RabbitTV Plus, except you don’t have to pay an annual fee to watch.

It’s similar to traditional cable; you can check out what’s currently on without a goal in mind for what to watch.

Although you won’t be able to catch hit network shows, you’ll be able to tune into many major networks’ news broadcasts and find familiar episodes of other relatively popular shows.

What We Like

  • Access to thousands of shows and movies.

  • Multi-platform availability.

  • New content added weekly.

What We Don’t Like

  • Tracks your viewing history.

  • Targeted advertising platform.

  • No clear way to filter TV shows from movies.

Tubi is another alternative that operates legally through license agreements. And just like Pluto TV, it also includes movies.

Tubi is totally free with a user account, which you can use to set up your watch queue or pick up where you left off from watching something previously. The platform tracks your viewing history so that it can learn about your preferences to make better suggestions for you.

Browse through all your standard categories such as Action, Drama, Comedy, and others or take a look at some of the interesting categories like Cult Classics and Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes.

With over 250,000 shows and movies available and more being added all the time, Tubi TV is quickly growing to become a TV favorite for internet users everywhere.

What We Like

  • Familiar interface and search tools.

  • Lots of related content, like fan cuts or highlight reels.

Lots of people don’t realize that YouTube is actually a great place to look for television shows.

While you won’t exactly get access to the most current or popular shows (unless you pay), nor a guaranteed high-quality viewing experience, you might still be pleasantly surprised by what’s available on the web’s largest video sharing network.

For example, if you search Boy Meets World—an old ABC family sitcom from the 90s—several uploaded episodes from virtually every season will come up. On the other hand, if you search for Grey’s Anatomy—a more current and popular television drama—you’ll notice results will come up where you’ll have to pay a fee to stream it legally on YouTube.

Some people get away with uploading popular TV show episodes for a certain time before they’re eventually reported or caught by YouTube. Depending on the timing and the show you’re looking for, you might be able to find something that actually shouldn’t be there due to copyright restrictions.

Don’t Forget Your Favorite Network’s Website!

If you have a TV show you love and you want to watch it for free because you missed it or maybe you don’t get that channel, a great way to catch up on it is to visit the network’s website and see if it’s available for streaming.

All of the networks below show some full episodes but also clips as well.

Here are some of the popular TV networks out there that provide options for streaming their TV shows:

  • NBC: NBC does a great job of quickly posting and keeping their TV shows around so you have plenty of time to watch them. It’s even possible for you to catch up on an entire series right from their website.
  • USA: Part of NBC, the USA Network brings you access to all of your favorite USA shows, including full episodes the day after they’ve aired.
  • ABC: They have full-length videos of the latest episode of every show as well as video clips, highlights, and sneak peeks into all your favorite ABC shows.
  • CBS: At CBS you can watch shows for free after they’ve aired on CBS. There are quite a few advertiser interruptions during the streaming video, but you’ll know when they’re coming because they are clearly marked on the screen.
  • FOX: FOX posts free TV shows for you to watch one day after they’ve aired on TV but they remain locked so that you can watch them until eight days after they’ve aired.
  • The CW: The day after the CW television shows air you’ll be able to watch them for free at their website.
  • PBS: PBS has a ton of free TV episodes online including Masterpiece Theater, PBS NewsHour, and Frontline.
  • MTV: MTV has full episodes of all your favorite MTV shows, including clips and after shows.
  • Freeform (ABC Family): The day after the TV shows on Freeform air, they post online so that you can enjoy them.
  • A&E: Watch full episodes of shows like Bates Motel, Storage Wars, and Dog the Bounty Hunter.

You might be required to provide your television provider information to watch certain streaming content on network platforms.

While watching a show week-to-week or year-to-year can make you love a show more, the wait can be agonizing. We’ve all been there; you fall in love with a show but must wait until new episodes are released. The wait can be hard, especially if you’re waiting several years for that new season.

It’s common for some viewers to wait until a show has finished before bingeing it all at once. If that’s you, then I have a handful of recently finished shows ready for you to watch from beginning to end. So, if you’ve got a weekend free on the couch, these are the recently finished shows to catch up on.

As a sequel/spin-off to Roseanne, The Conners continues the working-class comedy and drama of the Conner family. Despite Roseanne’s death in the show, the household is still packed with too many family members and not enough money to go around. The sitcom still centered around the dramatic and relatable aspects of life amid the pandemic, touching on small businesses, single parenting, and alcoholism.

The Conners continued for so long because it embraced what made Roseanne a standout domestic sitcom. It was honest about the world and wasn’t afraid to address the economic and political issues that face working-class families. With familiar characters staying true to this formula, reprised by the talents of John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf, The Conners was more grounded amid family sitcoms that seemed more fantastical with their artificial heart.

For long-time cartoon fans, Jellystone is a goofy romp of Saturday morning favorites. Various Hanna-Barbera characters assume different jobs, making their town of Jellystone one of boundless fun. This includes Yogi Bear as a doctor, Huckleberry Hound as the mayor, and Quick Draw McGraw as a teacher. Of course, none of them are experts in their professions, leading to many hilarious situations.

Watching Jellystone evoked nostalgic moments from the Cartoon Network bumpers, when all the cartoon characters interacted with each other. There are plenty of cameos in the show, but the best might be that of Space Ghost and Brak, reprised by voice actors George Lowe and Andy Merril from Space Ghost Coast to Coast. It’s a fun cartoon romp for everybody in the family, especially for the wealth of cartoons covered in the crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Mirths.

Few comedies are more awkward and uncomfortable than Big Mouth, an adult animated comedy about puberty. Nick (Nick Kroll) and Jessi (Jessi Klein) are two adolescents struggling to come to terms with their developing bodies. Their feelings manifest as invisible monsters, with Maurice the Hormone Monster (also Kroll) encouraging Nick and Connie the Hormone Monstress (Maya Rudolph) assigned to Jessi.

Big Mouth may be one of the edgiest adult cartoons for its willingness to probe into the absurdity of the human body and sex, embracing all the weird and gross stuff that comes with those elements. The only aspect more strange than the premise is the eclectic voice cast assembled, including the voices of Jordan Peele, Kristen Wiig, Peter Capaldi, and Jeff Goldblum, playing everything from sexual organs to pillows. For its bluntness and silliness, Big Mouth lasted for several seasons, garnered many award nominations, and received a spin-off series with Human Resources.

The legend of The Karate Kid continues in Cobra Kai, following the villain Johnny Lawrence. After slipping into a depression due to his loser status, Johnny aims to redeem himself by tending to the Cobra Kai dojo. While his work at the dojo inspires a new generation of young people to defend themselves, an old rivalry returns when Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) enters the equation with his Miyagi dojo.

While Cobra Kai will immediately be a draw for all the Gen-Xers who grew up with The Karate Kid movies, it has a strong enough story of redemption, legacy, and bravery that any young person can relate to. The arc of Johnny taking an interest in the teenager Miguel and standing up for himself is enduring, packed with inspirational moments. The earnest nature of leaning into the corny and compelling aspects of the franchise made this series such a treat and well worth a weekend binge.

Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale was brought to life with dark and poignant accuracy in the hit Hulu show. In the future, America has been transformed into a theocracy of Gilead, where women have lost their rights. June (Elisabeth Moss) is forced into servitude as a handmaid, where she must bear the children for the elite. But she’s had enough of this world and aims to rebel against the religious oppressors who stole her freedom and kidnapped her daughter.

The Handmaid’s Tale is not easy to watch, considering how viciously accurate it is in describing our current political landscape. That said, it does carry a fury in its heart for revolution, and Moss’s performance is stellar as a weary and revenge-oriented woman. There are also some genuine moments of hope and satisfaction, especially for the ending, which more or less delivers on Gilead crumbling. It is one of the more inspiring TV shows if you’re big on stories about rebellion.

Based on the film of the same title, What We Do in the Shadows continued the mockumentary format of a quirky house of vampires. A camera crew documents the many absurd exploits of the subjects, including the slow-witted blood vampire Nandor and the energy-draining vampire Colin, while their familiar, Guillermo, attends to their needs. While Guillermo hopes his work will reward him with vampire status, he soon learns how unlikely that’ll be for the dark discoveries he unearths.

There are too many hilarious moments in What We Do in the Shadows to count. Highlights of the show include Nadia’s complicated on/off romance with a ghost and the British Lazlo’s absurd Arizona persona of Jackie Daytona. With plenty of horror elements thrown into the mix, including a hilarious tribute to past movie vampires, I couldn’t stop laughing at this darkly comedic take on vampires, biting enough to warrant several seasons and Emmy nominations.

Among the myriad Star Wars TV shows, Andor is the clear winner for being divergent on the surface but spiritually faithful to the original trilogy. Set before the events of Rogue One, the series explores how Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) went from being a low-level punk to a high-level rebel. With the Empire’s vicious grip tightening, tensions flare as he decides to join up with the resistance against an increasingly fascist government.

Steering away from Lightsabers and Jedi, Andor depicts a grittier version of Star Wars while remaining closer to George Lucas’s real-world inspirations. The plot is intricate with its politics, and the characters within the Empire and Rebellion are richly complex. The two seasons present a more complete picture of the Star Wars universe and a surprisingly mature and nuanced take on war and oppression, emboldening the need for revolution.

Religious satire doesn’t get more grand than The Righteous Gemstones. Created by and starring Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down), the series centers around the wealthy Gemstone family and their Christian business ventures. But their lives are a mess with the lingering trauma of the patriarchal Eli (John Goodman) and the moral decay of his spoiled children (McBride, Adam DeVine, and Edi Patterson).

The Righteous Gemstones doesn’t skimp on the gaudy and gross-out satire, showcasing obscene opulence and even more obscene vulgarities. The whole cast is hilarious, but the standout is Walton Goggins in the unforgettable role of Uncle Baby Billy, the egotistical singing talent. There’s great mockery of the rich and religious, but also enough thought placed on the characters to care a little more about their plight than laugh at their pathos.

As the most popular Netflix show in the past four years, Squid Game viciously attacks the ills of late-stage capitalism. A mysterious organization gives those saddled with debt the chance to play schoolyard games to win a big cash prize. But the games are difficult and deadly, leading to deception and betrayals in the fight for money.

With its haunting juxtaposition of weaponizing childhood play, Squid Game was gripping television, but not in the same way as watching a reality show. The insidious nature of desperation and greed is explored as the protagonist of Seong Gi-hun struggles to not only make ends meet, but also find a way to fight back. With intense games and unease in the many characters, it’s nearly impossible to stop watching Squid Game once you start, making for the perfect weekend watch.

Now is the time to finally get caught up on all that must-watch TV everybody talks about. Whether you’re into sitcoms, cartoons, or thrillers, there will surely be at least one streaming show worth catching up on. Best of all, you won’t have to feel that familiar anxiety of waiting for more episodes or worrying about cancellation. Consider these binge-watches instead of rewatching Seinfeld for the 50th time.
