Fallout: New Vegas – Ultimate Edition
Despite a slightly rocky release thanks to some exceptionally bad bugs, Fallout: New Vegas has gone on to be heralded as one of the best in the post-apocalypse RPG series. The Ultimate Edition, which Epic offered for free in 2023, includes four story and two item pack add-ons that were initially released as separate DLC, making this an even better deal if you grabbed it for free.

Control
Control is a mind-bending third-person shooter with a complex story from the developers of Alan Wake. It’s a highly received AAA game that Epic has offered free three times in total. Unlike the usual weekly promotions, this game was twice only available to grab for two days, which goes to show you need to check the free games regularly to make sure you don’t miss a good one.

Cities: Skylines
Cities: Skylines may lack the AAA graphics of some earlier entries, but it’s an impressively complex and malleable city designer that somehow manages to make town planning an addictive and enjoyable endeavor. There are countless bonus add-ons available for this game, with a sequel available as well, but Epic only offered the base game in this promotion. It was well worth grabbing and playing nonetheless.

Death Stranding
From the acclaimed Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding is a bizarre-yet-captivating game that sees you acting as courier in a desolate future. Some have criticized it as little more than a “walking simulator” but there’s much more to it than that, and the story is unlike any other, making it big news when Epic offered it for free for the first time on Christmas day in 2022.

Total War: Warhammer
You wouldn’t need to spend countless hours amassing and painting an army of Warhammer figurines before battling with them if you’d grabbed Total War: Warhammer when it was free on the Epic Games store in 2022. There are much more modern Warhammer games—some of which have also been free on Epic—but this was one of the best.

Kerbal Space Program
Gaming shouldn’t be rocket science, but Kerbal Space Program makes it so. In this addictive game you get to manage your own space program, designing rockets, launching them, and hoping they make it into orbit without blowing up any goofy green Kerbal aliens. There is immense replay value here, and if you checked the Epic Games Store in January 2023 you’d have gotten it for free.

Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition
Fallout 3 may be the oldest game on this list, but it’s also arguably the best. It’s another acclaimed RPG from Bethesda’s popular Fallout series, but this third entry was exceptionally ambitious and well executed, offering countless possibilities for adventure and mayhem after you emerge from your vault into the nuclear wasteland. It’s not too expensive to get now, due to its age, but it’s still a good deal to get it for free if you can!

There’s a lot of money in selling the end of the world.
Looking at the promo dates on these games, it’s clear to see that Epic’s free offerings aren’t as strong as they once were. Most of the best games were given away in 2022, and not a single free game from 2025 has made it onto my list. Still, a free game is a free game, and you never know when another good one is going to be offered.
To make sure you don’t miss out on any of them, be sure to check into Epic’s store regularly. If you see something you want, all you need to do is sign in to a free account and claim your game while the promotion is running. It’ll stay in your library as long as you want, even if you don’t plan to play it for years.
