The cheaper TV from Sky

The cheaper TV from Sky

After teasing it at the same event where it launched Glass Gen 2 TV, Sky has officially announced a more affordable model, Sky Glass Air.

It’s a less expensive model than the Glass Gen 2 version, and while it won’t have as advanced a display or sound system, it’ll come with most of the bells and whistles such as Dolby Vision HDR, voice control and access to all the programmes and films Sky has to offer through various Sky subscriptions.

Sky Glass Air at a glance

  • Sky Glass Air will launch in 2025
  • We expect it to be cheaper than Sky Glass Gen 2
  • The TV will come in three sizes and three colours
  • Sky Glass Air will have a 4K Quantum Dot HDR display
  • The TV will run Sky OS with voice commands available

Sky Glass Air release date & price

We now have a confirmed release date and price for the Sky Glass Air.

It’ll go on sale from Sky on June 10th, and then it’ll be available to purchase from Currys from June 18th.

Prices for the TV start at £6/month for the 43-inch model, while the 55-inch screen is £10/month and the biggest 65-inch model will cost £13/month. That’s to buy the TV on a 48-month contract.

Those prices will change if you choose a 24-month contract. £6/month multiplied by 48 is £288. With a £20 upfront fee, you’d be spending over £300, to give you an idea of how much this TV would cost to buy outright.

TV subscriptions, meanwhile, start at £15/month for Sky Essential TV or £22/month for Sky Ultimate TV. If you buy the Essential TV package, the least you could expect to pay for Sky Glass Air would be £21/month, though that’s not factoring in any other subscriptions you might want to add

Like Sky Glass Gen 2, Sky Glass Air will be available in three sizes – 43-, 55- and 65-inch – and it comes in three colours. However, these will differ from the Sky Glass Gen 2 colors, with the Air available in Carbon Grey, Cotton White and Sea Green finishes.

Like Glass Gen 2, Glass Air’s lower frame sits close to the ground. According to Sky this is to help the performance of the speakers but it does mean that if you add a soundbar, it’s likely to obstruct the screen.

What screen does Sky Glass Air have?

Sky Glass Air features a 4K Quantum Dot HDR display with global dimming and contrast enhancement for a brighter screen, more vivid colours and a clearer picture.

It’ll support Dolby Vision HDR, as well as HDR10 and broadcast HLG. It means that HDR10+ misses the cut once again.

How bright does the screen go? We don’t know at the moment but we don’t expect it to be as bright as the Gen 2 screen, which can hit over 1000 nits. We’d expect less in terms of brightness, but from what we saw, the TV looks plenty fine for the asking price.

Sky Glass Air sound quality

Sky Glass Air features a 2.0 stereo speaker configuration with 30W of power and support for Dolby Audio.

Unlike the Sky Glass Gen 2, it is not a built-in Dolby Atmos sound system. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t support Atmos sound though. It can pass-through immersive Dolby sound through its HDMI eARC port to a soundbar.

We’d recommend users pick up one of the best Dolby Atmos soundbars if you want a more immersive audio experience to go with this TV.

Like Sky Stream and Glass Gen 2, Sky Glass Air runs Sky OS bringing the broadcaster’s content aggregation and built-in voice control to a lower price point.

The apps on Glass Air will be the same as those available on Glass Gen 2.

For those who already own Sky Stream or want Glass Air as a second TV for the living room, Sky Glass Air works seamlessly alongside other TVs and streamers in your house. It won’t work as neatly with Sky Q as that existsin a slightly separate ecosystem from the Sky Wi-Fi devices.
