The successor to one of the most popular game consoles of all time launches in mere days – but how feverish is the hype for the Nintendo Switch 2?
Since its initial reveal in January, the Switch 2 has been on quite a journey. We’ve had a full reveal with details of the launch titles, a pre-order period taken over by talk of pricing and tariffs and the now common scramble to get a unit secured in time for the June 5 release date.
I’ve been hands-on with the console, spending a day putting it through its paces and testing out a load of games, but I still have many questions, and I am sure most other people do too.
Any console launch is big news, especially one that is following the biggest console of the past decade – but how hyped are the Trusted Reviews team of product experts and beyond for the Nintendo Switch 2?

I have had every Nintendo console available in my lifetime (so since the GameCube – and even the Wii U), so the Switch 2 was a natural pre-order.
The camera is a classic Nintendo advert feature that I suspect less than 1% of people will use, and there’s no one thing I think you can say is a must-upgrade.

But, ultimately, it’s the best way to play new titles and will be for the next few years at least. New Pokémon and Mario Kart this year are enough to make it ‘worth it’ on day one, and very likely a new Mario 3D will likely land in the next year or so.

As I mentioned above, I’ve had some time with the Switch 2 already at one of the Experience events, and I was thoroughly impressed. After the reveal Direct I had Questions – would the display be a downgrade on the Switch OLED? Would the increased size make it less portable? How would an open-world Mario Kart perform? The demo answered all my questions, and grew my levels of hype a lot.
There’s still a lot to answer, and I can’t wait to get the Switch 2 in my hands after release and properly put it through its paces, testing battery life and performance and general usability.

I love my PS5 and Xbox Series S, but in no way did either of those consoles drive the same level of hype for me as the Nintendo Switch 2.
This feels like the necessary upgrade we’ve all been waiting for, and I can’t wait to see what Nintendo does with the added processing power going forward.
Given that Nintendo was able to make Tears of the Kingdom run on hardware that was six years old at the time, one can only wonder what a third open-world Zelda game might look like on the Switch 2.

I mainly use my Switch for casual multiplayer gaming across titles like Mario Kart and Overcooked, so I don’t think it’s worth splurging on a more expensive console, especially at launch.

I am not at all swayed by GameChat or camera support, as although I’m sure they’d have been a lot of fun during lockdown gaming sessions, I can’t imagine either will get used more than a handful of times.
Maybe when stock levels pick up and we get some of those juicy Black Friday deals and bundles, I will bite – but it’s not a day one buy for me.

I sold my original Switch I had since launch day, in anticipation of the price drop ahead of the Switch 2.
Now I am eagerly awaiting my Switch 2 arriving. I always feel like people accept high prices from Sony and Microsoft, like they’re somehow getting something “better” from them, while Nintendo is seen as lesser. For me, that’s just not the case.

As someone who plays primarily on PC and doesn’t get Zelda, I’m not interested.
While I’ve always admired what Nintendo has achieved with the Switch, the handheld landscape has changed considerably since the first console’s launch in 2017.

There’s now more choice and innovation in that space than ever before, and if I had the money, I’d be spending that cash elsewhere.

I’m not sure I will ever buy a Switch now. I never quite got around to picking up the original (even though I came close), and I can’t see myself getting a Switch 2.
I can’t quite put my finger on why. It’s most likely a combination of the price, missing out on the experience of the first one and that I’m not really into Mario, Zelda or Animal Crossing. Also, how many game consoles do I really need? There are just too many TVs to review.

Aside from Mario and Pokémon, I don’t have much affinity for Nintendo franchises, and I can get a good PC-based handheld that’ll run more games, including newer AAA games that are more to my taste.

The hybrid nature is cool, but I can’t see myself using it in any other form aside from its regular handheld mode anyway.

If I could find stock, I would have pre-ordered right away. Not so much for the upgrades to the console specs, but because the next Mario Kart (and probably the next Zelda, Smash, etc) won’t be coming to my original Switch.
