There are now even more choices for a Nintendo Switch 2 game controller. Several of 8BitDo’s controllers and adapters are now compatible with the Switch 2, after you complete a quick firmware update.
There were some issues with several 8BitDo controllers because they wouldn’t connect or work properly with the new console. However, 8BitDo quickly fixed the issue by releasing a firmware update that made eight of their main controllers compatible again.
This wide compatibility means that many 8BitDo users can keep using their favorite controllers with Nintendo’s newest handheld-console hybrid. Luckily, 8BitDo has several easy ways to update the firmware. The best way is to use the Upgrade app, which is available for both MacOS and Windows. This app makes the process simple by downloading and installing the necessary firmware when the controller is connected to a computer with a USB cable.

Trade a small amount of battery life now for improved battery health in the future.
Another option is the Ultimate Software, which works with Windows, Android, and iOS devices. For those who prefer a more polished desktop experience, the newer 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 is available for Windows and macOS. The update process is usually straightforward, requiring users to connect the controller, open the chosen software, and start the firmware update.
The update added support for the Switch 2 to the following models:
One of 8BitDo’s most popular models, the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller, is often compared to Nintendo’s own Switch 2 Pro Controller, but it’s cheaper. Both controllers are high quality, but the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 has an arguably better D-pad, which is known for being responsive and having a precise, clicky feel. It also has durable TMR joysticks that provide accurate control and better battery life, while the Hall effect triggers offer satisfying feedback.
The only thing I’d say against this controller is that the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 is missing some features found in the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Most importantly, it does not have built-in voice chat, so you’ll need a separate headset. It also lacks HD rumble, though it does have a standard rumble. Additionally, it does not support Nintendo’s official motion controls or amiibo functionality.
What I like the most is the extra customization. All buttons can be programmed using 8BitDo’s software, and the controller even includes additional bumper buttons. We loved it in our review, and I’d recommend it over the first-party controller if you are concerned about pricing.
Either way, this is great news because 8BitDo is a pretty well-known third-party brand, and I’ve not had any issues with their hardware. If you’ve yet to download the update and own a Nintendo Switch 2, make sure to do so as soon as you can.
