These Are My 5 Most Anticipated Netflix Movies of 2025

These Are My 5 Most Anticipated Netflix Movies of 2025

Netflix made several big announcements at its recent Tudum up-front event. There was plenty of excitement surrounding the return of their hit shows, such as One Piece and Stranger Things, but while television may be a strong suit for the streaming service, it also announced several amazing-looking original films for us to swoon over.

There’s plenty for Netflix to boast about this year, with many familiar faces. Director Guillermo del Toro is back with a new monster movie, Rian Johnson has another entry in his saga of mystery films, and Adam Sandler has dusted off a classic character. Here are the films to look out for on Netflix this year.

1

Frankenstein

Release Date

November 2025

Runtime

TBA

Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to horror and will soon be debuting his take on one of the most iconic monsters of the genre. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will undoubtedly be given a thoughtful adaptation by Guillermo, preserving the original’s Gothic setting and dark tone. The film will also feature a notable cast, including Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster.

Frankenstein has been a long-held dream project of del Toro’s, and Netflix is the ideal venue to bring it to life. He has already been providing the streaming platform with high-quality productions, such as his stop-motion Pinocchio and his horror anthology show, Cabinet of Curiosities. Given his ability to helm Gothic horror with Crimson Peak and monster movies like The Shape of Water, it’ll be exciting to see his take on the classic horror tale.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Release Date

December 12, 2025

Runtime

TBA

Daniel Craig returns as quirky detective Benoit Blanc for another murder-mystery from director Rian Johnson. As a standalone sequel to Glass Onion, Blanc now finds himself in a church setting to solve a new case. Another all-star ensemble of suspects will take to the screen, featuring Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, and Thomas Haden Church.

Johnson’s Knives Out films have proven to be the most exciting mystery movies of the past six years. With his first two films, he has been able to toy with the conventions of the genre while crafting a love letter to its hallmarks through an iconic detective. While Knives Out and Glass Onion were hilarious in their tongue-in-cheek nature, Johnson has stated that Wake Up Dead Man will be a much darker film, making for an exciting tonal shift with Craig’s quirky character.

3

Happy Gilmore 2

Release Date

July 25, 2025

Runtime

TBA

Adam Sandler is returning to his old sports comedy with Happy Gilmore 2. He’ll once more take on the role of Happy, the hockey-player-turned-golfer with a heck of a swing. Happy comes out of retirement to tear up the green with hopes of winning money for his daughter’s ballet school. In addition to Sandler, other returning actors include Julie Bowen, Dennis Dugan, and Christopher McDonald.

What will be most interesting about this legacy sequel is that the original Happy Gilmore relied on an abundance of slapstick, ranging from Sandler’s hockey-like golf tactics to his fist fight with Bob Barker. It’s been 29 years since the first film, and it’ll be fascinating to see how much of that violent comedy remains decades later. But we can likely expect some familiar gags and absurdly long drives from Sandler’s classic bag of physical comedy.

4

Fixed

Release Date

August 13, 2025

Runtime

1 hour 26 minutes

Genndy Tartakovsky diverges from his usual family-friendly cartoons with the raunchy adult antics of Fixed. The very premise of this 2D cartoon film makes it clear that it’s not going to be akin to Tartakovsky’s kid-friendly Hotel Transylvania. The plot involves a dog named Bull, a good boy who’s having one last adventure with his buddies before being neutered. Fixed features the voice talents of Adam Devine, Idris Alba, Kathryn Hahn, and Fred Armisen, to name a few.

Even though Genndy might be better known in the last few years for his PG-rated films, he’s no stranger to adult animation. He’s been working on more grown-up fare for Adult Swim, including the blood-soaked Primal and the fantasy epic Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, as well as a more MA version of his hit 2000s cartoon Samurai Jack. It’ll be nice to see him merge his admiration for adult cartoons with the absurdity of cartoon slapstick, as Genndy’s never made a full-on raunchy comedy before, and Netflix is a great place for adult animation.

The Thursday Murder Club

Release Date

August 28, 2025

Runtime

1 hour 58 minutes

Based on the novel by Richard Osman, The Thursday Murder Club appears to be a perfect cozy mystery, featuring an all-star ensemble that is both inviting and engaging. Four retirees who have taken to solving cold case murders for fun and get the chance to solve a real murder in their own backyard. The wannabe sleuths are played by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, with a supporting cast that includes David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, and Richard E. Grant.

Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) and produced by Steven Spielberg, there’s plenty of quirky charm present in the trailer. Of course, it helps that there’s an accomplished cast at the helm with a natural ease for this type of material. So, if Rian Johnson’s next Knives Out turns out to be darker, there’s a comfier alternative that sounds perfect for a Sunday afternoon (or Thursday, if that fits your schedule better).

Netflix might not always hit homeruns with their productions, but they do take chances with notable directors, and have even given more room for passion projects from the likes of David Fincher, Pablo Larraín, and Charlie Kaufman. Thanks to Netflix, we’ll finally be able to see Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited monster movie and Genndy Tartakovsky’s R-rated dog cartoon, projects that might’ve been too risky at the theater, but are sure to find an audience on streaming.
