Thunderbird 140 Is Here With a Dark Mode Toggle

Thunderbird 140, also known by its code name “Eclipse,” has officially been released. There’s something for everyone this time around, including dark mode reading improvements, easier interface customization, native notifications across all platforms, and much more.

Following up from the Thunderbird 136 update earlier this year, one of the biggest improvements coming Thunderbird 140 is Dark Message Mode. When Dark Mode is turned on in Thunderbird, emails will automatically adjust to a dark background for a consistent look. If the dark mode makes certain messages harder to read, users can switch back to a lighter view with a simple toggle.

Visual customization has also been improved with new Appearance Settings. You can now change how Thunderbird looks across all folders and accounts with just one click in the settings panel. This includes switching between Cards and Table view for the message list, adjusting the Cards View, and setting default sorting and threading options. These controls make it easier for users to personalize their email interface to match their preferences.

You Can Now Test Exchange Email Accounts in Mozilla Thunderbird

The long-awaited support for Exchange email accounts is working in test builds of Thunderbird.

Thunderbird 140 also now uses the built-in notification systems of Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems, making alerts more helpful and managable with your system-level settings. You can take quick actions directly from these notifications, like deleting or archiving emails, and can even set up custom actions to speed up daily email tasks.

Another great change is the updated Account Hub, which makes it easier to add or manage email accounts. This redesigned interface walks you through a few easy steps to connect all your email accounts, address books, and calendars. You can also now manually rearrange custom folders by clicking and dragging them into your preferred order. Experimental Exchange Support is also available, so you can set up a Microsoft Exchange account directly in Thunderbird by enabling a specific setting.
