Windows 11 Is Bringing Back Another Windows 10 Feature

Microsoft is bringing back a much-loved feature from Windows 10 in the latest test builds of Windows 11. No, it’s not a vertical taskbar. No, it’s not fewer advertisements. It’s a clock.

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5651 KB5060818 is now rolling out in the Dev Channel, and it brings back the clock in the notification center calendar that was previously found in Windows 10. The clock appears above the date and calendar, with hours, minutes, and seconds. The clock in the taskbar itself is not changing, since there has been an option for seconds in the taskbar for a while now.

Microsoft said in a blog post, “We’re excited to announce that we’re starting to roll out a highly requested feature from Windows 10, the option to show a bigger clock with seconds above the date and calendar in notification center. To turn this option on, go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and flip the switch for Show time in the Notification Center.”

This probably isn’t high up on the list of features we’d like to see return from Windows 10, but it’s still useful. If you want to see the current minutes and seconds, but don’t want to enable it for the main taskbar clock (where it might be more visually distracting), enabling the notification center clock seems like a helpful alternative.

The Insider update also introduces an AI search feature in the Settings app, intended to help you find the options you want with questions like “how to control my PC by voice” or “my mouse pointer is too small.” The search uses an on-device AI model, and for that reason, it’s limited to Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft says it’s available to test now for Snapdragon-powered PCs, and will roll out to Intel and AMD-powered Copilot+ PCs soon.

There are also some updates for Recall, the AI-powered timeline and activity search that started rolling out in April. There’s a new button to fully reset Recall and all its data, located under Settings > Privacy & Security > Recall & Snapshots. The default maximum storage duration for Recall snapshots has also been shortened to 90 days—it was previously unlimited—and people in the European Economic Area can now export Recall snapshots for third-party apps and websites.

These changes are now in testing for Windows Insiders, and they should roll out to the stable versions of Windows 11 in the coming weeks and months.
