Yes, Nintendo Switch 2 cartridges still taste horrible but there’s a valid reason

You may remember when the Nintendo Switch launched back in 2017 that, perhaps surprisingly, its game cartridges stole the show – and not for the reason you’d think.

In fact, it wasn’t anything to do with the game itself that dominated headlines, but the taste of the physical cartridge. Reports circulated that the game cartridges had a repulsive and bitter taste, which was then later confirmed by Nintendo.

Plus, much like its predecessor, Nintendo has revealed that the upcoming Switch 2’s games cartridges will also sport the same, disgusting taste. But why is this the case and is it really necessary? We explain everything you need to know about the Nintendo Switch 2 cartridges taste below.

Why do Nintendo Switch games taste so bad?

Essentially, Nintendo Switch game cards are coated in denatonium benzoate which, although is completely harmless to health, has a seriously bitter taste. Nintendo has done this purposely, as a deterrent to discourage children and animals from putting the cartridge in their mouth and attempting to eat it.

This is pretty clever when you think about it, as the cartridges are so small that it’s far too easy for both kids and animals to pop one in their mouth, which could be fatal. Instead, with the foul taste, a child or animal is more likely to spit a cartridge out within seconds.
